Full suspension 29er versus hardtail 29er w/slacker geometry?

Ok. So here's the thing. I have a Surly Pugsley, which is like a 29 inch diameter wheel/tire setup, but on 26" rims, with 4 inch tires.

I also have a Cannondale Caffeine frame, 26 inch wheels.

I have been riding the Pugsley almost exclusively since I got it in like December or January or so. Which was also when I started riding places like Sals, i.e. places with obstacles like log-overs. Just hopped back onto the Cannondale, and taking it to places that have log-overs and such has been a shocking and unpleasant experience.

Permethrin insect repellant spray

Anyone have any experience with this stuff? DEET will melt lycra and destroy DWR coatings, so does anyone know if this stuff will do the same? The data sheets say it is safe for pretty much any material other than human skin until it is dry and it actually kills ticks instead of just repelling them. Thoughts?

Coil Fork vs. Air Fork

Late last October I bought a new Marzocchi 44 TST2 Air 130mm/150mm fork for my Heckler. I only got to ride it once or twice in November before I hung the bike up for ski season. Now that I have had a few more rides this Spring on the new fork I am noticing some things I love about it and some things that...well....I need to adjust to that my old coil Manitou Minute didn't do.

Tire selection for local trails

Heretofore I have been using Kenda Nevegals that came on my Cannondale 26" hardtail. I am looking to try something different now, and was wondering what type of tire y'all think is a good all-rounder for all the local stuff, like Sals, Nox when it opens, Trex, SME (haven't been to either of those yet).

I was looking at some of the Schwalbe options but not sure what kind tread I should be looking for.

For Raystown and similar smooth flowy stuff I am going to use one of my existing Nevegals on the front and a Smallblock 8 on the back. But I know that isn't a good option for around here.

Jesus/mother nature/?? wants me to have a new rear derailleur

So, the past week I've been kicking around the idea of buying SRAM X.9 rear derailleur and shifter to replace the Deore setup on my new bike. Partially because I'm used to X.9, but partially because I prefer the 1:1 actuation ratio and having both triggers on the thumb-side.

But I couldn't really justify it, since the parts already on the bike worked fine and all... until I caught a nice thick branch/stick in my chain today at Sals and bent the RD. Biggrin

So I guess now I HAVE to buy it. That settles that!
