rear derailleur recommended?

I have an older 26" mtn bike. 3 spd in front, 9 in rear. Rapid fire shifting with an xtr rear derailleur. The springs went in the rear derailleur and the local bike shop said they don't make an xtr anymore for it. Any suggestions for a new one? Want something equivalent to the xtr. Thx

FatBike Factoids and a potential Frankenfatty project

OK - I'm taking a big chance and starting a thread about bikes - fatbikes
I've been seeing a lot of fatbike porn lately and with the coming winter it’s got me thinking of a Frankenfatty fatbike project. I’ve got an old frame with decent clearance and enough drive trains, breaks, bars and such (well several) that should be adaptable for fatbikedom. Here are a few questions and random thoughts. Any of you fatbike geeks have any info, experience or sites to check out?

First the set-up.........

So long Norco it was fun while it lasted.

My Norco Six bit the dust saterday night on Eagle at Raystown. Nothing glorious just a stupid rock kicking up, it was like a chain reaction. Rock got kicked into my derailuer by the front tire, derailuer hooked rear wheel spokes and jammed the entire back end. Derailuer tab never broke but the frame did. Both holes are cracked out for the derailuer mount. Besides for the frame the rear derailuer, cable, a few spokes and trueing should have it covered. Crappy way to be put into retirement but after 5 years of abuse I guess its time.

Which size fork?

I recently purchased a 2009 Trance x4 frame to start building slowly. I thought one of the first things I would purchase would be a fork. I noticed that the x4 came with a 120mm fork and the x1 and x0 came with a 140mm fork. I was wondering if I should go with the 140mm instead of 120mm? I am newer to mountain biking and not sure if I would notice the difference. I am open for suggestions. I will probably try to find a used fork in either size.

Shoes

so, my burly Vans SPD shoes just blew apart during a recent mild crash, so the time has come to pick up some new shoes. Since I've been using the Vans since I starting riding clipped in, I don't have any idea what shoes are better than others.
So, what do you use, how do you like 'em, or what would you have bought instead of the shoes you currently have? My only preference is that they're under $200 retail.

Thanks

Gardy
