Lighting Survey 2012

My lights -- not the old ones, but the new ones I bought in 2004 -- finally crapped out, so I'll be getting some new lights in the very near future, and so I was wondering: what lighting systems do you use, and what do you think of them? How powerful, HID vs LED, lumens, run times? What do you all recommmend?

(I have a particular brand/model in mind, but I don't want to prejudice anyone's answers so I'll keep that to myself for now.)

When was the last time you checked your helmet?

I was just cleaning up some of my gear over the weekend and noticed a crack along the side of my helmet. It looked like it happened just from keeping it in a bag for roadtrips. It's nothing too serious but I'm sure it's compromised so I'm heading out to replace it. I never really thought to specifically check it since I haven't had any of "those" crashes so it might be a good idea to check out your safety gear every once in a while and not take it for granted.

When you need it, it's too late - helmets save lives. It saved mine.

Avid Hydraulic Question

Just changed pads on my Avids for the first time and fluid squirted out from reservoir when I pushed the pucks in. This happened on both calipers. Anyone else have experience with this? Never happened with any other brakes, but maybe it's common with Avids?

Thx,
D

Magicshine mount, in case you don't like the O-rings

Just thought I'd share this in case anyone has a Magicshine and desires a more durable mount. I got the mount from www.bikeempowerment.com, the guy takes a mount from something else (not sure what) and makes the proper mods to fit your particular light, and it was only $15. In the case of my MJ-872, he shaved off some of the metal, and bored out a hole in the right place.
