can someone give me the skinny on how the mm system works? brand recommendations? what you'll need for what? (for example, if you're not pro and racing dh, what work typically be a good pick-up)

Kids/Small Bicycle Recommendations

My little bro who's about to be 14 (5' 80lbs.) is in pretty desperate need of a bike. He's riding an old Pacific of mine that I had a decade ago, and it finally just pretty much crapped out, the rear derailleur deoesn't work, the front derailleur is all messed up, it's extremely heavy and obviously no good on the trails. He hasn't gotten to try out any yet, as I don't want to take him on this hunk-a-junk and ruin the concept of mountain biking for him. So does anyone have any suggestions on a smaller (14-16 in. frame) bike that is trail worthy, but nothing serious.

Since everyone is encouraging me....

Since everyone is encouraging me to try winter riding, what gear do you recommend...BESIDES a camelbak filled with Jack Daniels, Kenny!!

I've ridden in the low 40's, but never colder,...yet.

My biggest issue when riding in the cold so far has been my lungs hurting for a few hours afterwards. Will a face mask help with that?

Trainers???

OK, so I'm thinking I'd like to buy a trainer. I get cranky and whiney in the cold :cryin:, so I doubt I'll be doing more than a couple of rides a month during the winter..

So...I'm thinking of buying a trainer to help get me in and keep me in "bike shape" for the winter.

So many options out there, magnetic, fluid, rim driven, etc.

Who uses one, and what do you recommend???

Thanks!!

Women's Seat

OK, I know that there are only a few women on here, but I was hoping you ladies could tell me which seat you're riding? I have what my hubby calls an "old lady seat". It's super cushy, but wide, so it makes riding back on the saddle really difficult.

In the market for a new one and was looking for some recommendations. I know everyone is different, just need a starting point.

Thanks all!

Michele

Fork confusion

I,m looking for suggestions or even maybe a used fork for my trance. The Marzocchi front end isn't holding up. I think I'd like another inch of travel so maybe a 120mm fork. And what about lock out do I need that for typical trail riding.:out:

Rear Shock Advice

I'm a rookie to the mountain biking scene and on top of that had intensive shoulder surgery a week after I got my bike in August. So I really only started riding in late October two weeks after I removed my sling, but I've been consistently getting to South Mountain-Lehigh, Salisbury, and Jordan Park. I'm riding a 2006 Trek Fuel 80 that I bought new in August (for an unbeatable price!). Now I'm not too picky as I'm a newbie at this, but I've noticed my rear shock is beyond unresponsive. It's a Rock Shox Bar 2.1, which I know is one of the lowest shocks on the totem pole from Rock Shox.

Bike racks?

We're trying to decide what to get. I drive a Pontiac G6. I know there are roof racks available for my car, but I'm extremely vertically challenged (5 feet tall on a good day), and doubt I'll be able to get a bike onto the roof, on days rides that I'm not with the husband.

So, I'm thinking a trunk mounted carrier. Anyone have one? What do you recommend? What should I absolutely avoid?

Thanks!!! Smile
