Brand new rider looking for first bike

So I have read about mountain bikes online, gone to my local shops and looked online for a used mtn bike with no luck. I am searching for a 15"-16" frame. I am looking to spend around $300. It will likely be used once or twice a week for solo rides in the valley, essentially to augment my workout routine and to have some fun ofcourse!
If anyone on here can help me finally get on the dirt please let me know.
TIA

2008 rock shox boxxer world cup dh fork. Typical cosmetics nothing major at all. Just had John at cutters replace seals. The bushings will need to be replaced at the end of the season, other than that ,the fork works flawlessly. If you want to get into dh or want to upgrade to an air fork, but don't have the usual $1500 for a new dh fork then this is the fork for you...... $300.00 OBO.

For Sale: On-One 456, 97/98 Klein Mantra Race frame, Surly Pacer road bike, more...

Time to make a little room in the garage (and build up a new frame)...

I have a vintage 97/98 Klein Mantra Race frame, bright red w/ black rear triangle. Well-used, but also much-loved. Has a Fox Alps 5R shock w/ very few miles on it since it was last rebuilt by Fox. Rear triangle is canti- or v-brake only. No disc mounts w/o brake therapy adapter or similar. Will throw in XT bottom bracket (square taper), XTR front derailleur and cane creek headset. Needs main pivot bushing replacement (can be found on e-Bay for ~ $35).

$300 obo.

Just starting, looking for a cheap, but good used starter

I just got into mountain biking and have been using a friend's bike. I'm looking for a mountain bike that I can afford and that will last me a bit while I develop my skills and what not. I know it's a low price range, but $300 is the most I can do, preferably lower, but $400 if it's something I cant pass up. I figure as a beginner, I'm looking for a hardtail with disk brakes. I also ride street and am probably doing a decent trip this summer, so a fork that locks is pretty key. I already have the semi-slicks picked out for it.
