In a recent book "How lance does it" the secret to his success was the journey "superficial motivators can throw you for a lloop and result in diminished motivation and focus....Someone with a clear pupose and motivated by love of the journey drives rewards that transcend the fickle winning and losing of the superficial world." Lao-Tzu said "A good traveler has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving"
I'm trying for a few things this year and i am slowly realizing that the journey is the true race. Learning how to cope with injury, bad results and even great results continues to prepare me for the journey.
My 6 yr old saw me race at the velodrome last week and asked if he could do it. Turns out Air Products has a "pee wee peddlers" program for 5-8 year olds. it teaches them bike handling skills and other things. So i decided to take him and the 4 yr old to see what it was about. it was the last week of that class but the instructor said no problem and even said evan could do it. They both had their trek jerseys and garret had his new mtn bike that he saved and paid for himself. it was an hour of fun for sure. There was about 20 kids of all ages. Their parents were all there helping out guide the kids through the courses set up withcones and half cut tennis balls. they practiced braking and garret almost went over the handlebars but learned quickly how to use his breaks. They got to do laps around the track as well and keeping eyes on both of them was challenging for sure. i watched evan fall trying to ride up on the track and then looked the other way seeing garret up near the wall riding around with the biggest smile on his face. For only being 4,evan was there doing everything. his average cadence was about 150!!!! in the end, i had as much fun as they did. They couldn't stop talking about it.
Velodrome Pee-wee peddlers
Then i raced today hoping for a win but before the race i was stretching and something popped in my back and i couldn't get up and had to be helped to the start line. i hung in for 15 miles in the top 5 but it was too much. Got spit out the back and worked with a kid to at least finish.
it is something to watch your kids grow up and constantly wonder if what your doing is right. Sometimes you watch yourself and wonder if what your doing is right.
i can't help but remember what steven covey(runs franklin covey, the organizer company) that one's goal is....
